WSUS Error after August.2019 Updates: Clients not reporting in

Environment

Windows Server 2016 Core

Roles Installed

    • WSUS configured for SSL

Problem

After the installation of August.2019 Microsoft Security updates. I found my clients would no longer check in. At first i thought this might be because of a SSL problem as i run WSUS over 8531.  I even attempted restoring to a previous backup to no avail so into the logs we go.

I pulled up the c:\windows\windowsupdate.log and began to scour the logs for any clues.

Logon Login failed for user ‘NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE’. Reason: Server is in script upgrade mode. Only administrator can connect at this time.

Resolution

I can’t say for sure what the root cause of the problem. But what i did find was others with similiar errors. Running the command below seems to work, your mileage may vary.  If i had more time i would love to know what actually broke it but for now this will do.

“C:\Program Files\Update Services\Tools\wsusutil.exe” postinstall

  2. Just spent half a day with his issue following a in place upgrade of our 2012 R2 WSUS server to 2019. Everything was working client getting updates and installing but we just weren’t getting any reports back from the clients. This fixed our issue many thanks Ian.

  3. THANK YOU! I just ran into this issue. All of my desktops stopped reporting after 9/15/2023. So apparently some sort of recent update to the WSUS server caused this.

  4. Just spent a day and a half on this. No reports coming in but everything else was working. Stumbled across the “Logon Login failed for user ‘NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE’. Reason: Server is in script upgrade mode. Only administrator can connect at this time” error. Could not get it out of the upgrade mode. Ran teh command and Reports are coming in now. Thanks!
